Breaking into Fort Knox

Monday, June 18, 2012
My job as Database Specialist took a very fortunate turn when the organization implemented an electronic health records system last fall. The new system is so comprehensive, technical specialists (like me) were needed to train and support our providers. My job quickly changed to one of training and software assistance within the provider pod (the area where the medical providers have their desks and collaborate on medical cases.) This ensured our providers received timely support to do what they do best – practice medicine. Initially I was a little nervous about working with the medical providers. I suspect for many of us administrative and support staff types, the “Pod” is an intimidating place. It’s a room mostly sealed off from the rest of the organization, a little Fort Knox-like, and there are so many different providers each day, speaking in the foreign tongue of medicine, and they all seem so busy. Intimidating indeed.

I know that just like Fort Knox, our “Pod” contains gold as well. I’ve gotten to know our providers more closely and found them to be a great group of dedicated professionals. They go the extra mile when it concerns the pursuit of someone’s health. I would put our providers up against any other clinic in terms of quality care and dedication. I feel fortunate and privileged to be in a position to help this group of wonderful people, who work on the front lines helping our patients return to and maintain good health.
