Change

Friday, May 31, 2013
Change is usually thrust upon us. I don’t think I look for it or openly receive it but for some reason I often hang out in the same room with it. Usually I turn my back on it, maybe take a peek in its direction, quickly look away, but it creeps up on me. What I have noticed about change is that it usually sidles up slowly, inching oh so carefully as if I won’t notice, and then suddenly it is standing on my toes and I have no choice but to notice and embrace it. I remind myself not

Calling All Worriers

Friday, February 15, 2013
Long-time board member Rick Schaler, MD knows I worry, and one of the ways he volunteers is to bring humor into my life. His wisdom rings true for so many of us. “Keep doing the good work, and let someone else worry. Maybe taking on an extra volunteer would help. You can hand her a list of your concerns every morning, and she can be tasked to worry about them all day long, and perhaps even lose a little sleep for you. Presto! you are off the hook. Problems solved.” And

Obsess About Success

Friday, February 01, 2013
I do this most of the time. I do this when looking back on the past 18 months, reflecting on the move into our new facility. I do this when I think about our transition to electronic health records. I do this when I think about our many programmatic achievements, integration of behavioral health service, and growth in our physician network; but most of all when I speak with patients who thank Doctors Care for changing their lives for the better. I do this as I look back on my 15 years at

A Snapshot

Monday, January 07, 2013
How do I pick one moment in time during 2012 that shifted my perspective for Doctors Care? Is it fair to just pick one? I wish I could quickly survey each person that spends time within these walls and get their snapshot of one event highlight from the past year. Was it a patient that touched your life, a funny story shared between staff, or a newly learned skill that changed the way you do your job? All those things happened for me. But if I only get to pick one, it was the day we decided t

PA Student Thank-You

Monday, December 31, 2012
I recently received this letter from a former PA student and wanted to share with all of you: Dear Bebe, I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude for my time as a student at Doctors Care. When I took a tour last year I thought to myself that this would be a phenomenal site to rotate at as a student. I was right! There are just so many great things about Doctors Care that made it a valuable experience for me. In my one month here, I got to know some very amazing peopl

A Week in the Life of an Executive Director

Friday, November 02, 2012
As the Executive Director of Doctors Care, I am often asked what I actually do in any given week. Sometimes I wonder myself. What I do know is that the week passes quickly - often too quickly. Listed below are some of the highlights for me from this past week: 1. I discussed the "what if's" of health reform and the implications to Doctors Care several times. 2. I worked on the long-term stewardship of our new facility. This includes financing and future facility management, discussion

Gratitude

Friday, June 29, 2012
Gratitude: It is what keeps me going. Last week a patient thanked us for getting her a much needed eye surgery. This week a patient thanked us for treating her so well in the clinic. Today I thanked a volunteer that touched my life ever so gently and shifted our course as an organization. It re-confirms my belief that I never know how the next person I meet may have a profound impact on my life. This volunteer entered Doctors Care when I needed him. At the time I didn’t even know

2011 Annual Report

Wednesday, May 23, 2012
At Doctors Care, our services and programs are growing and improving all the time. Our strategic planning efforts ensure that the organization and staff are anticipating, predicting, and shaping the course of our changing future, listening carefully to our environment, and shifting and re-steering as often as needed. In response to these factors, we are pleased to announce the release of our 2011 Annual Report online. Click here to see what we have been up to this past year, and view our

Patience, Persistence, Perseverance

Thursday, September 22, 2011
Wow, these three words hit home for me right now. If you come inside Doctors Care, you’ll find us learning new things as we are busy with: training our clinical staff in the use of our new electronic health record, going “live” with new software to manage our network of 900 providers and program patients, integrating new staff and volunteers, and raising capital funds for our new location These activities are important pieces of the puzzle that allow us

Offering a Shelter for Those who Need Us

Tuesday, August 30, 2011
Last week, I had these opportunities to see how we offer shelter: I spent time with the family of a long-time volunteer whom I adore and miss dearly since she moved out of state. Her family is honoring her with a financial gift to Doctors Care. What a wonderful surprise! I spoke with a community member searching for possibilities for a man who does his lawn work and desperately needs surgery for an inguinal hernia. I told him about Doctors Care. I also met a young woman who desp
