Storytelling With Doctors Care - Henry's Story
Friday, March 01, 2013
It is unfortunate, but not all stories have happy endings. Fortunately, if we can learn from unhappy endings, something good can be exposed………like a silver lining in a cloud!!!
Not so long ago I encountered a patient that seemed really gruff on the outside (I will refer to him as Henry) but once I got to know him I realized he was really just a big teddy bear needing some TLC and a little extra help. Maybe it was his pride that made him seem gruff or maybe it was due to
Storytelling With Doctors Care - Charlene's Story
Friday, January 25, 2013
Recently, I received a phone call from former patient Charlene, thanking Doctors Care for assistance during a very difficult time in her life. The Behavioral Health Team (BHT) saw Charlene for approximately six months. During that time the BHT supported her in any way that we were able through psychiatric medications, therapy, and support letters for her Social Security Disability application. The BHT worked with the Sliding-Fee-Scale Program staff to coordinate care and support for this

The Colorado KaleidosCOpe
Friday, January 11, 2013
Doctors Care is excited to announce our partnership with the Colorado Health Foundation in the Colorado KaleidosCOpe project. We were recently awarded a $5000 donation for submitting a video to their project, a statewide storytelling campaign designed to shine a bright light on the good work of their grantee partners and the people whose lives they impact. Through this project, Colorado KaleidosCOpe hopes to spark the conversation of how the Colorado non-profit community provides much-need

One Lucky Guy Gets Stuck "In Between"
Doctors Care offers hope for those “too rich” to receive public benefits and “too poor” to afford private insurance. Kent* is that “too poor, too rich” guy, who was simply lost “in between” – until he found Doctors Care.
Some would say Kent has been one lucky guy. In his 20s, a horse kicked him right above the knee. In his 40s, he was hit by a car and fell, hitting his knee on

Storytelling With Doctors Care - Lisa's Story
Friday, November 30, 2012
As a Medical Assistant at Doctors Care, I come across many people who inspire me to continue my career in service. Lisa* is one of those people.
After several visits to the Emergency Room for continuous upper right quadrant pain, Lisa was still searching for much-needed relief. In her constant struggle to find health care, her only choice was to keep returning to the ER for medical services. During her last visit she told doctors and nurses she was in so much pain she could no longer ha

Storytelling With Doctors Care - Jamie's Story
Wednesday, October 24, 2012
Imagine being a young, vibrant individual who suddenly had a tragic accident. Waking up in a hospital, Jamie (pseudonym) realized that the recovery ahead would be long. Unfortunately, with no health insurance and no recourse possible through auto insurance, fear began to build. The hospital bills were overwhelming, and the road to healing would only cause more financial distress. Based on the recommendation of the hospital, Jamie contacted Doctors Care.
After filling out the Doctors Car

Thank You Dr. Steckel
Monday, October 01, 2012
Recently, I had the opportunity to edit a video featuring all of the patients that we served in our most recent photo project. This video was specifically put together to thank our amazing friend and photographer, Dr. Richard Steckel. It was a complete joy for me to sift through all of the clips of our parents and children in search of the perfect moments for this video.

Storytelling With Doctors Care - Debra's story
Monday, September 17, 2012
This blog represents a new recurring series for the Doctors Care Blog - Storytelling. In this series, we will highlight patients whose lives have been affected by the staff and volunteers at Doctors Care. Stay tuned for a new story each month. Below is Debra's story.
Debra discovered Doctors Care in 2011 after losing her engineering job in California and moving back to Douglas County with her husband. She learned about how our Sliding-Fee-Scale Program, with its network of volunteer p

A Lifelong Difference
Monday, August 13, 2012
What I like about Doctors Care is that it can be best described as a community organization that provides affordable medical care for many, including those who have fallen on hard times. At my age and income level, I can no longer afford traditional insurance, but have several years left before I am eligible for Medicare. Seeing doctors assigned to me through the Doctors Care Sliding-Fee-Scale Program has enabled me to receive medical care that I would ordinarily have to do without. Before I

Poverty
Friday, August 03, 2012
Do you know what state has the fastest growing rate of childhood poverty?
It’s Colorado!
Denver and San Luis Counties have always had poverty issues, but the newest rising population for poverty resides right here in our suburbs. On top of that, the gap between children that achieve and children that don’t is wider than ever. If we aren’t educating these children as well as we can, is there really a chance for them to lift themselves out of poverty? If they
