Storytelling With Doctors Care - Henry's Story
Friday, March 01, 2013
It is unfortunate, but not all stories have happy endings. Fortunately, if we can learn from unhappy endings, something good can be exposed………like a silver lining in a cloud!!!
Not so long ago I encountered a patient that seemed really gruff on the outside (I will refer to him as Henry) but once I got to know him I realized he was really just a big teddy bear needing some TLC and a little extra help. Maybe it was his pride that made him seem gruff or maybe it was due to
Storytelling With Doctors Care - Charlene's Story
Friday, January 25, 2013
Recently, I received a phone call from former patient Charlene, thanking Doctors Care for assistance during a very difficult time in her life. The Behavioral Health Team (BHT) saw Charlene for approximately six months. During that time the BHT supported her in any way that we were able through psychiatric medications, therapy, and support letters for her Social Security Disability application. The BHT worked with the Sliding-Fee-Scale Program staff to coordinate care and support for this

Passion, Compassion, Social Responsibility
I have been involved with Doctors Care for about eight weeks as the Physician Recruiter for the Sliding Fee Scale program. What I have seen and experienced in this short period of time is truly remarkable in regards to how Passion, Compassion and Social Responsibility work hand in hand to successfully provide much needed quality health care services to an underserved population in our own community.
PASSION is what I see every day in the

Storytelling With Doctors Care - Jamie's Story
Wednesday, October 24, 2012
Imagine being a young, vibrant individual who suddenly had a tragic accident. Waking up in a hospital, Jamie (pseudonym) realized that the recovery ahead would be long. Unfortunately, with no health insurance and no recourse possible through auto insurance, fear began to build. The hospital bills were overwhelming, and the road to healing would only cause more financial distress. Based on the recommendation of the hospital, Jamie contacted Doctors Care.
After filling out the Doctors Car

ER Use for Sliding-Fee-Scale Patients
Tuesday, October 16, 2012
Doctors Care's Sliding-Fee-Scale Program has many rules and policies for patients to follow once they become enrolled in the program. Usage of the emergency room (ER) is one particular area where rules are strictly enforced, due to the fact ER’s can be very costly for patients, and keeping medical care costs low is one of the program’s goals. In addition, ER abuse costs our partner hospitals unnecessary resources and money, which is why this is a violation of a patient's contract

Storytelling With Doctors Care - Debra's story
Monday, September 17, 2012
This blog represents a new recurring series for the Doctors Care Blog - Storytelling. In this series, we will highlight patients whose lives have been affected by the staff and volunteers at Doctors Care. Stay tuned for a new story each month. Below is Debra's story.
Debra discovered Doctors Care in 2011 after losing her engineering job in California and moving back to Douglas County with her husband. She learned about how our Sliding-Fee-Scale Program, with its network of volunteer p

A Lifelong Difference
Monday, August 13, 2012
What I like about Doctors Care is that it can be best described as a community organization that provides affordable medical care for many, including those who have fallen on hard times. At my age and income level, I can no longer afford traditional insurance, but have several years left before I am eligible for Medicare. Seeing doctors assigned to me through the Doctors Care Sliding-Fee-Scale Program has enabled me to receive medical care that I would ordinarily have to do without. Before I

A Volunteer's Perspective
Friday, August 10, 2012
Most people look forward to the weekend…time to play, relax with friends and family and perhaps kick the dog around the front porch. (Don’t call animal control…it was a joke!) But not me...I look forward to Wednesday and Thursday because those are the days I volunteer at Doctors Care. I discovered Doctors Care a few months after my husband and I moved to the area. I didn't know anyone here except my son’s family, and I wanted to get involved in something meaningful.

FAQ's
Tuesday, August 07, 2012
One of the many goals we have at Doctors Care is to teach our patients responsible use of the health care system. The reason for this is so that one day when our patients do get health care, they are familiar with how to work within our current health care system. As the Patient Care Coordinator here at Doctors Care, I am often asked many questions about how our Sliding-Fee-Scale Program works. I know this program can be quite confusing at times, and part of my job is to help our patients su

A Great Internship
Tuesday, June 12, 2012
Working at Doctors Care has been an invaluable experience to me. When I interviewed for this internship in January, I knew that Doctors Care was a perfect fit for me, because one of my largest concerns is the availability of health care for disadvantaged populations. Michelle Johnston explained the new Medicaid program for adults without disabilities or children, and that I was going to identify those Doctors Care patients who might qualify and help them with the application process. While this
