Bike Safety
Friday, May 17, 2013
Bike riding is a lot of fun but accidents can easily happen – even with the best of riders. With the warmer weather finally here and children anxious to get out on the road, let’s consider a few things to keep your child safe out there.
The safest and easiest step to prevent children from going to the emergency department is simply to wear a bike helmet. While many bike accidents may consist of a skinned knee, there are many others that are serious enough to be fatal. While
If I Had More Than 24 Hours in a Day
Tuesday, May 14, 2013
I’m sure we have all thought, “What if we had more than 24 hours in a day? Just think of all the things we could do!” Let’s say we now have a 28 hour day. Well, I’m sure your mind will be in overdrive as you come up with that long, long list of “to do’s” that in no way can fit into the now fictitious longer day. So, what do we do? We start to remove items from the list (hopefully leaving the important things) or we just dream – “Wha

A Focus on Employee Strengths
Friday, April 12, 2013
Walking through any local bookstore or looking online, it is obvious there are many self-help books and assessments ready to identify our characteristics that need improvement. Our society seems to have an obsession with focusing on weaknesses. Fortunately, author Tom Rath feels differently about this approach, and he, along with the Gallop organization, have developed an assessment tool focusing on individual strengths. Why not focus our energies on the areas we excel and where we can find s

I'll Be Your Mittens
Tuesday, January 29, 2013
Last time I did a blog I started and ended it with comments about my dog Tucker. Now Tucker has passed away and I have a new puppy named Moose who is a King Charles Spaniel. Recently after I hurt my knee, I was at the Chatfield dog park where I walk Moose almost every day - be it rain, shine, night , day, freezing cold or boiling warm. This particular day happened to be with wind chill below freezing and I was using my crutches. A man came walking by me while talking to his dog. The Bro

Monday, December 31, 2012
I recently received this letter from a former PA student and wanted to share with all of you:
Dear Bebe,
I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude for my time as a student at Doctors Care. When I took a tour last year I thought to myself that this would be a phenomenal site to rotate at as a student. I was right! There are just so many great things about Doctors Care that made it a valuable experience for me.
In my one month here, I got to know some very amazing peopl

Health in Action - Beyond the Classroom
Tuesday, September 25, 2012
Leaving my job with a small non-profit in the Dominican Republic to pursue a master’s degree in Global Health, I was prepared to trade practical experience for academic ponderings, and a job I was passionate about for whatever would help pay the rent. Then I found Doctors Care.
For the past three months, I have had the privilege of working in a setting that bridges my experience in the classroom with a program that is creating real-world change. More importantly, it’s a posi

Aquatic Bulletin Boards...and Other Things
Friday, September 21, 2012
You would be surprised at how many people urinate in dressing rooms. After one, and only one, college summer working for a department store, I decided there was something more important to be doing with my time. What’s more important than folding the same shirts I just folded 7 minutes ago, you ask? I found the answer at Doctors Care.
When I first came to Doctors Care as a volunteer in 2006, I was put to great use editing newsletters and creating a volunteer resource center. Whil

Employee Recognition
Monday, September 10, 2012
Since the beginning of the year, Doctors Care has put in place an employee recognition program which gives staff the opportunity to thank and recognize co-workers who go above and beyond their normal job duties. Our Program Director, Michelle Johnston came up with the idea, and we designed a program to encourage employees to look for the positive as they interact with others each day.
After eight months of activity, I continue to be amazed at the dedication, cooperation and team work wh
