In a departure from our usual blog postings, we want to share a press release about an event that recently occurred at Doctors Care that demonstrates an outstanding act of volunteerism from one of our partners. Thank you COPIC and your Community Action Team (CATeam)! A Good Cupcake

Saturday, May 04, 2013
Sharon Fisher, Volunteer Coordinator for Doctors Care, organized a wonderful volunteer appreciation celebration last week. Staff brought in a pot-luck lunch as a way to say thanks to all those who make our work possible. Dr. VanderArk gave us all a reminder about where we've been and how far we've come. And Sharon ensured that the whole event went off without a hitch, and that every volunteer received a small token of our appreciation. A special thank you to our staff for cooking u

Beautiful Gifts of Love

Friday, February 22, 2013
I would like to talk about volunteers that come with full arms! What do they have in their arms, you ask? Blankets, quilts, hats and more. We are very thankful to the ladies at the Englewood Elks, Mrs. McDonald and Lila for their recent gifts. Volunteers give a very special part of themselves no matter what they do. The time it takes to hand-embroider, crochet, knit or sew by machine does not go unnoticed. Theses ladies enjoy their craft so much that they share without expecting anythi

Boomers, Health Care and the Changin' Times

Tuesday, February 05, 2013
If there’s one overriding concern for most Americans in 2013 it’s a worry about health care coverage. Simply put, most of us either wonder, “Where can I go to get what I need?” or “ How am I going to pay for it?” Not many of us are convinced we have the answers. Health care issues comprise much of the news coverage. Almost daily a newspaper headline or an online news update decries increases in cost, lessening of benefits, and new federal and state l

Life Lessons

Friday, January 18, 2013
When I got the email from Michelle saying that my blog was due, my response was, “What blog?...I don’t write blogs…I haven’t written anything since college! That’s two lifetimes ago!” The topic she gave me was, “What have I learned about Doctors Care while Christina was gone.” Well, it’s not so much what I learned about Doctors Care as what I learned about myself. I started volunteering at Doctors Care 10 months ago after a four year recover

2012 Nears a Close!

Friday, December 21, 2012
This year has just flown by. I thought it appropriate to end it with a thought about the thank you notes we have received from patients; many letting us know that if Doctors Care were not here and able to help them, they wouldn't be on their road to recovery. My thought is this. The task of helping people at Doctors Care is not always limited to the staff, and is not always medically-related. This year alone we have had 77 volunteers working diligently answering and returning patient p

The Gratefuls

Friday, December 07, 2012
It’s that time of year where we all start to get a case of “the gratefuls.” The truth is I wish it didn’t take a holiday to remind us of how much we all have to be grateful for. Many of us have our own personal safety-net of family and friends, our health and a safe place to call home. For that alone we should feel fortunate. But on top of that, here at Doctors Care we can be grateful to have a job, one in which we help to be the safety-net for some who don’t. W

The Simple Things Make a Big Difference

Friday, October 12, 2012
My journey with Doctors Care began on January 25, 2012, my first day as a volunteer. I can certainly say that, thus far, it has been an enriching experience and one I will never forget. I began with the opportunity to work the front desk as a patient greeter. That experience was awesome! Not only was I able to give the patients a warm welcome, but I was able to see how a simple greeting with a smile can make a difference in a person's day. As my volunteer experience continues, in

How to find the Right Volunteer Job for You

Friday, October 05, 2012
When thinking about volunteering there are several things to take into consideration as you go through the decision process. The first step is to reflect on a few questions which will help you decide what you want out of a volunteer experience. You may consider the following helpful as you get started in the process. Why do I want to volunteer? What do I want to get out it? What kind of commitment can I give on a regular basis? What types of people do I enjoy being around? Do th

Thank You Dr. Steckel

Monday, October 01, 2012
Recently, I had the opportunity to edit a video featuring all of the patients that we served in our most recent photo project. This video was specifically put together to thank our amazing friend and photographer, Dr. Richard Steckel. It was a complete joy for me to sift through all of the clips of our parents and children in search of the perfect moments for this video. Care to watch it? Take a look below!
